Truth in Our Giving

In Acts 5:3-4, we find a sobering moment in the early church when Peter confronts Ananias about his deceit. Ananias had sold a piece of property and withheld part of the proceeds while pretending to have given it all to the apostles. Peter’s piercing question, “Why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit?” exposes the serious nature of Ananias's actions—not merely a financial misstep, but a heart issue that reveals a deeper conflict between integrity and greed. This passage challenges us to examine the motivations behind our actions, especially in our spiritual lives.

When Ananias sold his land, it was fully within his rights to do as he pleased with the proceeds. Peter reminds him, “Before it was sold, did it not belong to you?” This statement speaks volumes about personal ownership and the stewardship God expects from us. Our resources—time, talent, and treasure—are entrusted to us by God, and we are called to use them wisely and generously. This accountability should inspire us to evaluate whether our giving, both in financial and non-financial ways, reflects the heart of Christ within us.

What can we learn from this encounter? First, the Holy Spirit desires truth and transparency in our lives. When we hide parts of ourselves or our resources, we create a barrier to our relationship with God. In contrast, living in authenticity allows us to fully experience God’s grace and provision. Proverbs 11:3 reminds us that “the integrity of the upright guides them.” Today, let’s strive for integrity in our dealings, open our hearts, and allow the Holy Spirit to guide our actions.

As you go through your day, reflect on what it means to live truthfully, especially in your relationships and commitments. Remember, God calls us to a life of generosity grounded in love, rather than deceit. May you find joy in giving, whether it be your time, talents, or gifts, knowing that authentic generosity reflects the heart of God. Wishing you a day filled with truth and transparent joy!
