Amid the siege of the city of Abel, a wise woman stood up to intervene. The entire city was condemned to destruction because of the rebellion of one man, Sheba. Just as in spiritual life, the sin of one can often bring consequences for many. But this woman, known for her wisdom, acted with discernment, showing that knowledge and the application of truth can prevent collective ruin. She did not ignore the problem but confronted it wisely, seeking a solution that would spare the whole city (2 Samuel 20:16-22).
Just as that woman was recognized for her wisdom, we too must dedicate ourselves to studying God’s Word. The Bible guides our choices so that we are not led astray by error but by the truth that sets us free. When we know God’s will, we can discern between right and wrong, just as she did. Wisdom is not just about knowing but about acting according to what is right, removing evil before it contaminates our entire lives.
The process this woman followed is an example for us: she identified the problem (the presence of Sheba), evaluated it wisely, and acted to remove only what was wrong. Similarly, in our spiritual lives, we must examine our hearts, recognize sin, and remove it so that our whole being does not suffer the consequences. If we allow sin to remain, it can lead us to eternal ruin. But if we act wisely, as she did, we will be spared.
In the end, the city was saved because someone acted with discernment. Our souls will also be preserved if we seek the wisdom that comes from God. The passage in 2 Samuel 20 teaches us that although sin brings severe consequences, obedience and discernment can deliver us from destruction. May we, like that woman, be known for our wisdom and faith, applying the Word to our lives and choosing the path that leads to eternal life.
