Obeying God to the End

Obeying God’s voice requires steadfastness and discernment, for the Lord does not share His authority with anyone. In 1 Kings 13, a man of God received a clear command: not to eat or drink in that city, nor to return by the same way. When the king tried to persuade him with offers, he remained faithful, saying, "Even if you were to give me half your possessions, I would not go with you" (1 Kings 13:8). His resolve teaches us that obedience to God should never be negotiable, even in the face of pressure or tempting rewards.

Yet Satan is cunning and even uses seemingly godly words to lead us astray. The old prophet deceived the man of God, claiming, "I too am a prophet, as you are, and an angel said to me by the word of the Lord" (1 Kings 13:18). But it was a lie. How often do we hear voices that sound Christian yet contradict God’s Word? The enemy twists the truth to confuse us, so we must examine everything in light of Scripture and not yield to teachings that oppose God’s revealed will.

The consequence of disobedience was tragic. The man of God gave in to persuasion, ate and drank, and on his way was killed by a lion (1 Kings 13:23-24). His story warns us: even a momentary lapse can bring severe consequences. It’s not enough to start well; we must endure to the end. Those who are faithful in all things, even the small commands, demonstrate true reverence for God.

May this account inspire us to seek discernment and unwavering obedience. The world offers many voices, but only God’s deserves our complete submission. When He gives us direction, we must not turn to the right or to the left. May the Holy Spirit strengthen us to resist the enemy’s lies and remain faithful, even to our last breath.
