Strength That Comes From God's Presence

God called Gideon to an impossible mission with words that still echo today: "Go in the strength you have... Am I not sending you?" (Judges 6:14). The Lord didn't demand Gideon first become stronger, braver, or more qualified. He simply commanded him to use the little strength he already possessed, because the real power would come from divine presence. How often do we hear this same call from God, yet hesitate because we feel inadequate?

Gideon's response reveals our human tendency to doubt: "How can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest... and I am the least in my family" (Judges 6:15). He saw only his limitations, while God saw the unlimited potential of His presence. This conversation shows us that the Lord doesn't choose the equipped, but equips the chosen. When we feel small before great challenges, we must remember God's criteria differs from ours.

God's promise to Gideon remains our assurance today: "I will be with you" (Judges 6:16). He didn't promise to remove all obstacles, but guaranteed His companionship on the journey. The Midianites seemed invincible, yet would be defeated "as if fighting one man" because the Lord would fight for His people. When we feel weak, this is precisely the ideal condition to experience God's power perfected in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).

May we respond to God's call as Gideon eventually did - not relying on our own strength, but on the certainty of divine presence. Our sufficiency comes not from ourselves, but from the One who calls us. When we hear the Lord telling us "go in the strength you have," let's remember He's referring not to our human ability, but to the supernatural strength that flows when we obey in faith. The true measure of our strength lies not in what we possess, but in Who goes with us.
