Decisions That Seem Harmless but Lack God’s Guidance

Life presents us with choices that, at first glance, may seem simple or even insignificant. We may assume there’s no need to seek God in certain decisions, especially when everything appears obvious and safe. However, the story of the Israelites and the Gibeonites in Joshua 9:14 warns us about the danger of acting without consulting the Lord: *"The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the Lord."* What seemed like a practical decision became a trap, as the Gibeonites deceived God’s people, leading them into an alliance that was not His will.

How often do we do the same? We make decisions based solely on our own reasoning, outward appearances, or haste, without seeking divine guidance. We trust our own understanding and later face consequences that could have been avoided. Scripture reminds us: *"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding"* (Proverbs 3:5). Even when something seems harmless, God knows the end from the beginning and wants to guide us in every step.

Lacking God’s direction can lead us to wrong commitments, harmful relationships, or paths that pull us away from His purpose. The Israelites were deceived because they relied only on what they saw, not on what God would tell them. Similarly, we can be misled by appearances when we fail to seek wisdom from above. James 1:5 encourages us: *"If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault."* No decision is too small to surrender to Him.

Today, examine your heart: Do you bring all your choices before God, or only the ones you consider difficult? The Lord wants to be your counselor in everything, for He sees beyond our limited perspective. May we learn to depend on Him in every decision, trusting that His way is always perfect. Let our prayer be like David’s: *"Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long"* (Psalm 25:5).
