The Bible warns us about the importance of choosing our friendships wisely, as they have the power to build us up or tear us down. In 2 Samuel 13:2-3, 5, we see a tragic example of how a bad friendship can lead to devastating consequences. Amnon, the son of David, was consumed by a sinful desire for his half-sister Tamar, and instead of seeking help to overcome this temptation, he turned to Jonadab, a cunning but wicked friend. Jonadab did not advise him to flee from sin but rather to devise a scheme to fulfill his impure desires.
The context of this passage shows how a corrupt friendship can be the spark that ignites a tragedy. Jonadab, instead of being a voice of wisdom, encouraged Amnon to commit an abominable act. This reminds us of Proverbs 13:20, which says, "Walk with the wise and become wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm." Amnon chose to listen to wrong advice, and as a result, his life and Tamar’s were ruined.
On the other hand, the Bible also presents examples of friendships that strengthen and inspire. David and Jonathan are a model of loyalty and mutual encouragement (1 Samuel 18:1-4). Jonathan protected David, even when it meant going against the interests of his own father, Saul. This friendship was a refuge for David in times of persecution, showing how healthy relationships can be instruments of God for good.
Therefore, we must carefully evaluate who we walk with. Friendships shape our character, influence our decisions, and can draw us closer to God or lead us away from Him. May we seek friends who challenge us to live in holiness, just as Jonathan was for David, and may we also be that positive influence in the lives of those around us.
