Psalm 116:12 confronts us with a profound question: "What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits toward me?" This inquiry reveals the heart of one who recognizes the countless gifts received from God. Our Christian life, from the first moment of conversion until today, has been marked by divine grace - protection, provision, forgiveness, and guidance. Each day we spend in the Lord's presence and in fellowship with His church is an unmerited gift that should fill our hearts with gratitude.
How often do we complain about the small sacrifices required by church life? We murmur about serving, contributing, or dedicating our time. Yet we forget that everything we are and have comes from the Lord's hands. Our families have been blessed, our health preserved, our character transformed - all by God's grace manifested through community life. The church isn't perfect because it's made of imperfect people, but it is God's chosen instrument for our sanctification and spiritual growth.
The benefits of life in Christ are innumerable. The peace we experience in crises, the joy that sustains us in trials, the hope that encourages us amid uncertainties - all these are fruits of communion with Christ. When we gather as a church, we celebrate not just material blessings but especially the spiritual treasures we've received: forgiveness of sins, adoption as God's children, assurance of eternal life. As Peter declares, we were called "out of darkness into His marvelous light" (1 Peter 2:9).
Faced with such abundant blessings, our only adequate response is an overflowing heart of gratitude and a life dedicated to service. We don't serve to "repay" God for His goodness - that would be impossible. We serve because we've been transformed by His love. Every act of service, every contribution, every moment dedicated to the Kingdom should be a spontaneous expression of a thankful heart. May we, like the psalmist, daily recognize the Lord's benefits and respond with lives of praise and surrender. For indeed, "What shall I give to the Lord for all His benefits toward me?" (Psalm 116:12).
