The story of Obed-Edom shows us the transforming power of God’s presence in a home. In 1 Chronicles 13:13-14, after a mistake in transporting the Ark of the Covenant, it was left in the house of Obed-Edom, a man who was not an Israelite but who received the Ark with reverence. For the three months the Ark remained in his home, God’s blessing filled his family and all his possessions. This account teaches us that when God dwells among us, everything around us is impacted by His grace.
The context of this passage reveals that the Ark represented God’s very presence among His people. Although David had good intentions in trying to bring it to Jerusalem, the improper procedure brought severe consequences. Yet, in Obed-Edom’s house, where the Ark was received with respect, there was abundant blessing. This reminds us that it is not enough to desire God’s presence—we must seek it the right way, with humility and obedience.
Just as Obed-Edom’s life was transformed, our homes can also experience the same blessing when we make room for God. Psalm 127:1 declares, "Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain." When He is the foundation of our family, there is peace, guidance, and provision, even in the midst of trials. His presence brings protection, joy, and purpose, filling our daily lives with meaning.
Therefore, may our home be a place where God is honored, His Word is taught, and His love is lived out. Just as Obed-Edom was blessed for hosting the Ark, we too will be blessed when we allow God to take the center of our lives and our homes. May He not be just a visitor, but the Lord of our household.
