The story of David and Nabal shows how our actions build a reputation that precedes us. While Nabal was known for his arrogance and wickedness, the servants testified about David: "David's men had been very good to us... They were like a wall around us night and day" (1 Samuel 25:15-16). This reputation of integrity and protection that David built is what saved his household from destruction when Abigail intervened.
Our daily actions are constantly writing the story others will tell about us. Every act of kindness, every attitude of respect, and every demonstration of character accumulate to form the image people will have of us. Nabal's servants remembered with gratitude how David's men had protected them in the wilderness, and it was this positive memory that led them to warn Abigail of the impending danger.
While Nabal reaped the bitter fruits of his bad reputation - "our master is such a wicked man that no one can talk to him" (1 Samuel 25:17) - David reaped the benefits of having lived with integrity. David's good reputation opened doors for reconciliation and forgiveness when the situation could have ended in tragedy. Our actions today are the seeds that will determine how we are received tomorrow.
May we live in a way that builds a reputation that glorifies God and blesses others. Like David, let us be known for protecting the vulnerable, keeping our word, and maintaining integrity. When our lives are evaluated, may people be able to say as Nabal's servants did: "They were like a wall around us." This is the legacy that remains when all else passes away.
