Fanning into Flames or Quelling the Fire?

In the wisdom-filled book of Proverbs, we are reminded of a simple, yet profound truth: "Where there is no wood, the fire goes out; and where there is no tale-bearer, strife ceases" (Proverbs 26:20). At first glance, this verse seems straightforward, focusing on the practical aspects of life. But when we dig deeper, we can discover a more profound, spiritual application which can guide our actions and attitude throughout the day.

Just like a fire needs wood to continue burning, strife needs a tale-bearer, or a gossiper, to remain alive. Gossip and unkind words are likened to the kindling that stokes a fire. The bigger the pile of wood, the larger and more widespread the fire. Likewise, the more we participate in gossip and harmful talk, the larger the conflict, division, and pain within our communities. When we refrain from indulging in these harmful behaviors, we are removing the wood and quelling the fire.

But, how can we practically apply this wisdom to our daily lives? How can we be peacemakers in our communities? By choosing our words carefully and checking our hearts before we speak, we can prevent the strife from spreading. We must strive to fill our conversations with kindness, understanding, and love. As followers of Christ, our words should build up, not tear down. We should foster unity, not cause divisions. With God's help, we can turn away from gossip and choose love instead.

As you navigate through the events of your day, remember this wisdom from Proverbs. Choose to be a peacemaker, one who quells fires instead of fanning them into flames. May the Holy Spirit guide your words, your actions, and your heart. Let's pray for strength and wisdom to live out this verse in our daily interactions. Wishing you a day filled with peace, love, and constructive conversations.
