Love Sincerely, Abhor Evil

A reflection on Romans 12:9 invites us to explore the profound duality found within this scripture verse: 'Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.' The instruction here, though simple, poses a lifelong challenge for every Christian. It directs us to nurture authentic love and reject all forms of evil, which perpetually battle within our hearts.

The call to let love be genuine requires an introspective look at how we relate to others. Are we showing love from the authentically compassionate core of our hearts? It’s easy to put on a façade, to utter empty words of love, yet harbor resentment, judgment, or indifference towards others. But God's command is for an unfeigned, selfless love, the sort that willingly lays down one's life for another, as Jesus did for us.

Moreover, we are told to abhor what is evil. In the subtle deceitfulness of our human nature, we may often find ourselves tolerating or even embracing elements of evil. These elements may seem insignificant, like little white lies or harmless gossip. Yet, they breach our relationship with God, who is Holy and Righteous. We are urged to embrace discernment, to resist the tempter's snares, and to keep a devoted grip on all that is good.

Lastly, the instruction to hold fast to what is good is particularly critical. It reminds us that our spiritual race is not a fleeting sprint but a steady marathon. Our task is to consistently uphold the Christian values of kindness, patience, humility, faithfulness, amongst others, regardless of life's uphill challenges. May you find encouragement in this word today, knowing that in pursuing sincere love, abhorring evil, and sticking to the good, you are pleasing your Heavenly Father. Have a good and blessed day!
