Chapter 32 of Numbers presents us with a profound lesson on leadership and spiritual priorities. The tribes of Reuben and Gad, owners of large herds, saw the lands of Jazer and Gilead as the perfect place for their livestock. The temptation to settle there was great, and soon they made a request to Moses: “If we have found favor in your eyes, let this land be given to your servants as our possession. Do not make us cross the Jordan!” (Numbers 32:5).
But Moses, as a wise leader, recognized the danger in that desire. This was not the time for rest, but for conquest. The people still had battles ahead, and if those tribes refused to fight, they could discourage the others. So he responded firmly: “Shall your fellow Israelites go to war while you sit here?” (Numbers 32:6).
The tribes’ reply was wise. They did not abandon their brothers but promised: “We will arm ourselves and go ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them to their place. Meanwhile, our families will live in fortified cities for protection from the inhabitants of the land.” (Numbers 32:17). Moses then agreed, but with a condition: “If you will do this—if you will arm yourselves before the Lord for battle, and if all of you will cross the Jordan until the land is subdued before the Lord—then you may return.” (Numbers 32:20-22).
This story teaches us that often, God gives us dreams, promises, and legitimate desires—but before we can enjoy them, there are battles to be fought. We may see "good land for our herds"—opportunities, ministries, relationships—but the Lord first calls us to spiritual warfare. He knows that if we commit to His battle, the reward will come at the right time.
How often do we want to jump straight to the blessing without going through the struggle? We want victory without war, maturity without the process, ministry without discipleship. But God reminds us: “Focus on the battle I have called you to fight. The Promised Land will be yours, but first, fight alongside your brothers.”
Today, He asks us: Are you willing to fight before resting? To obey before receiving? If we trust Him, the reward will be greater than we imagine. Just don’t take your eyes off the mission. Conquest comes after courage.
