The encounter between Jesus and the man who had been freed from demons, recorded in Mark 5:18-20, teaches us a profound lesson about the purpose of the blessings we receive. After being healed, the man begged to follow Jesus, but the Lord gave him a different mission: “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you” (v. 19). This response from Jesus shows us that the blessings we receive are not just for our personal comfort or joy but also to make us instruments of testimony and the spread of the gospel.
Often, when we receive a blessing, our first reaction is to rejoice and dive deeper into church life. This is good and necessary, but we cannot stop there. The physical, emotional, or spiritual blessings God grants us have a greater purpose: to glorify Him and bring the message of salvation to others. The man freed by Jesus understood this. He did not keep his story to himself; he went out and proclaimed “in the region of the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and all the people were amazed” (v. 20).
How can we do the same today? First, through our testimony. When we share what God has done in our lives, we show the world that He is real and that His transforming power is active. Second, we can use the material blessings we receive to advance God’s Kingdom. Whether it’s a job, an opportunity, or financial resources, everything can be used as a tool to bless others and preach the gospel. Third, we must be attentive to the doors God opens in our path. A new job, for example, is not just a personal achievement but an opportunity to impact colleagues and environments with the light of Christ.
Jesus calls us to be His ambassadors, not just within the walls of the church but in every place He puts us. The blessings we receive are like seeds that should be planted in the hearts of those who do not yet know God’s love. May we, like the freed man, use our stories and resources to proclaim the wonders the Lord has done in our lives.
May every blessing received remind us of our mission: to take the gospel forward so that everyone may know the mercy and power of Jesus Christ.
