Walking on Stormy Waters

From the Gospel according to Matthew (14:23-33), we find a portrayal of life’s tribulations and the power of faith to see us through them.

After sending the crowds away, Jesus went up on a mountain to pray. When evening came, he was there alone (Matthew 14:23). This tells us about the significance of alone time with God. Like Jesus, we too ought to seek divine comfort and solution in our solitude.

Meanwhile, his disciples were in the middle of the sea, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against them (Matthew 14:24). This tumultuous sea serves as a metaphor for the trials we face in life.

Amid the storm, Jesus approached them, walking on water. The disciples were so fearful they assumed they were seeing a ghost (Matthew 14:26). This reveals that sometimes, the answer to our trials can be miraculous and intimidating. However, Jesus reassured them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid" (Matthew 14:27).

Prompted by faith, Peter asked Jesus to command him to walk on water. Jesus did, but Peter’s faith faltered when he saw the strength of the wind. He began to sink, and cried out, "Lord, save me!" (Matthew 14:30). Despite his wavering faith, Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, reprimanding him gently for his lack of faith. This illustrates that even when our faith falters, Jesus is there offering us saving grace.

As they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Those in the boat worshipped Jesus, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God" (Matthew 14:33). This reassures us that when we place our trust in Jesus, our trials will subside, and we acknowledge his divine intervention.

Today, let these lessons guide you. Trust in the divine power of Jesus to calm your storms. Reach out in faith, even if you falter, trust that he is there to save you. May you be filled with courage to face your day, knowing that the Son of God is with you.
