The Christian life is a journey of total dependence on Christ. No matter how much we desire to be strong and self-sufficient, the truth is that all of us, without exception, carry weaknesses that remind us of how fragile and needy we are. These weaknesses can manifest in different ways: a struggle against sin, a tendency toward anxiety, a difficulty in forgiving, or even an inner battle that seems never to cease. The apostle Paul, in 2 Corinthians 12:9, offers us a transformative perspective on this topic: “But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
Dealing with our weaknesses can be frustrating. At times, we feel tired of always being on the verge of failure, fighting the same sins, or failing to reach the perfection we so deeply desire. This sense of inadequacy can lead us to discouragement, but it is precisely in these moments that God invites us to depend on Him more deeply. Our weaknesses are not a mistake in God’s plan; they are opportunities for us to experience His grace and power. When we recognize that we cannot overcome on our own, we make room for Christ to work in us and through us.
Paul teaches us to boast in our weaknesses, not because they are good in themselves, but because it is in them that Christ’s power is manifested. When we surrender our weaknesses to Him, we allow His grace to sustain us and His power to be perfected in our lives. This does not mean that we will be immediately freed from all our struggles, but that, even in the midst of them, we can experience Christ’s victory over the flesh.
To deal with our weaknesses in a practical way, it is essential to ask ourselves some important questions:
Do I recognize my weakness?
The first step is to admit that we have areas of vulnerability. Denying our weaknesses only distances us from the solution that Christ offers.
Do I recognize that only in Christ can I fight against it?
We cannot overcome our weaknesses by our own strength. We need to trust that Christ’s power is greater than any struggle we face.
Am I seeking God daily?
The more we give space to our weaknesses, the more we may lose the desire to seek God. That is why it is crucial to maintain a daily devotional life, praying and asking Him to keep us from error and strengthen us in our walk.
God’s grace is sufficient for us. It not only covers us but also empowers us to live in a way that glorifies Him. When we humble ourselves and acknowledge our dependence on Christ, He transforms our weaknesses into instruments for His glory. May we, like Paul, boast in our weaknesses, not because we like them, but because in them we see Christ’s power at work in us. May our lives be a testimony that, even in our fragility, we are strengthened by the One who is strong.
