The tongue is one of the smallest members of the body, yet its impact is immense. James, in his letter, warns us about the importance of controlling what we say, comparing the tongue to a ship’s rudder: “Take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts” (James 3:4-5). Just as a small rudder directs a great ship, our words have the power to guide or mislead not only our own lives but also the lives of those around us.
When we decide to follow Jesus, our speech should reflect the transformation He works in us. Before, we were like everyone else, using our tongues to hurt, criticize, or spread curses. But in Christ, we learn to use our words to build up, encourage, and bless. James reminds us that “with the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be!” (James 3:9-10). This inconsistency does not align with the life of those who have been transformed by the gospel.
Controlling our speech is not an easy task. James acknowledges that “we all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check” (James 3:2). However, even knowing that we fail, we are called to continually seek mastery over our tongues. This requires vigilance, wisdom, and dependence on the Holy Spirit, who enables us to speak at the right time and in the right way.
Our words have the power to destroy or build up. Just as a small spark can set a forest ablaze, a poorly chosen word can cause great harm. On the other hand, a word of encouragement, forgiveness, or hope can bring healing and restoration. That is why we must carefully choose what we say, always seeking to bless rather than curse, to edify rather than tear down.
May we, as followers of Christ, use our words to spread the good news of the gospel. May our tongues be instruments of blessing, reflecting God’s love and grace. And may we, in every conversation, every piece of advice, or every correction, seek to glorify God and bless those who were created in His image.
May the Lord help us master our tongues, transforming them into powerful tools for His Kingdom. And as we speak, may we always remember the eternal impact our words can have.
