The Purpose of God's Discipline

The story of Pharaoh and the Israelites is a testament to the divine plans of God and His intent to make His name known to all peoples.

The scripture says, "For by now I could have stretched out my hand and struck you and your people with a plague that would have wiped you off the earth. But I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth." (Exodus 9:15-16).

Even through Pharaoh's arrogance and cruelty, we see God's mercy and loving discipline. Even while punishing Pharaoh for his crimes against the Israelites, God's intent was not to obliterate but to reveal His power and authority as the one true God.

Pharaoh, in the midst of his trials, confesses his sins, "This time I have sinned," he said to them, "The LORD is in the right, and I and my people are in the wrong." (Exodus 9:27).

The theme here is not God's wrath but His incalculable mercy. Like Pharaoh, we too are corrected and guided by His loving hand, not with the intent to destroy us, but to draw us closer to Him.

However, the story doesn't end there. Despite recognizing his sins, Pharaoh returned to his wicked ways, facing dire consequences. His story serves as a sobering reminder that recognition of our sins isn't enough– it should lead us to genuine repentance.

As we contemplate these verses today, let's remember to heed the warnings and discipline from our loving God. Let us turn from our sinful ways and strive to walk in obedience to His commands, knowing that He corrects us for our own good, and to make His name great among the nations.

May you be encouraged today by the grace of our loving, corrector, and powerful God. May His mercy lead you to repentance and His love guide you through the day.
