Jesus, in His teachings, always invited us to look beyond appearances and human traditions. In Mark 7:18, 20, and 23, He reveals a profound truth: it is not what enters a person that defiles them, but what comes out of their heart. Sin does not begin in our actions but in the intentions and desires that arise within us. Jesus warns us that it is from within the heart that evil thoughts, bad intentions, and all kinds of impurities emerge, distancing us from God.
This revelation leads us to a crucial reflection: we need to frequently evaluate the condition of our hearts. Often, we focus on avoiding external sins but neglect the battle happening within us. The heart is the soil where sin is born, and if we do not take care of it, bad seeds will grow and produce fruits that drive us away from God's will. That is why it is essential to examine our thoughts, motivations, and desires, allowing the Holy Spirit to show us what needs to be transformed.
But what happens when we struggle to abandon a specific sin? In these moments, the battle may seem unbearable, and the temptation overwhelming. Yet, Jesus teaches us that the key to victory lies in focusing on the cleansing of our hearts. Instead of merely trying to avoid sin externally, we must seek deep transformation, starting from within. This means immersing ourselves in the Word of God, which is living and active, able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart (Hebrews 4:12). It also means praying continuously, asking God to create in us a pure heart and renew a steadfast spirit within us (Psalm 51:10).
When we dedicate ourselves to cleansing our hearts, something powerful happens: we gain the ability to flee from evil. A heart that is purified and aligned with God not only rejects sin but also longs for holiness. This internal transformation strengthens us to resist temptations and empowers us to live in a way that glorifies God.
So today, take a moment to examine your heart. Allow God's light to shine on hidden areas and bring to the surface what needs to be purified. If you are struggling with sin, do not be discouraged. Focus on seeking God, filling your heart with His Word, and praying without ceasing. Little by little, you will witness transformation, and the sin that once seemed irresistible will lose its power over you. Remember: a pure heart is the path to a life of freedom and holiness.
