In the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 25, Jesus tells the parable of the talents, a story that invites us to reflect on how we use what God has entrusted to us. One of the servants, upon receiving a talent, decided to hide it in the ground, afraid of losing what he had received. He justifies his decision by saying: "Master, I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you" (Matthew 25:24-25). However, the master rebukes him, calling him a "wicked, lazy servant" (Matthew 25:26). This reprimand shows us that God expects more from us than simply keeping what we have received. He blesses us so that we may multiply these blessings, putting them into practice for the benefit of others and for His glory.
This parable teaches us a profound lesson about generosity and the responsibility that comes with divine blessings. Everything we have—whether time, resources, gifts, or abilities—is a gift from God, and it was not given to be selfishly hoarded. When we hide or neglect what we have received, we fail to fulfill God’s purpose. God blesses us so that we may be channels of His grace, sharing and multiplying what He has given us. As the text says: "For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them" (Matthew 25:29). This means that generosity and working in God's kingdom bring even more blessings, while omission and selfishness lead to loss.
Therefore, this passage challenges us to examine how we are using the talents God has entrusted to us. Are we investing in His Kingdom, helping those in need, sharing the love of Christ, and multiplying the blessings we have received? Or are we, like the lazy servant, burying our gifts out of fear or complacency? Working in God's work is not just a responsibility; it is a privilege. It is an opportunity to participate in His plan and witness His grace expand through us.
May we decide today to be faithful and diligent servants, using everything God has given us to glorify Him and bless those around us. May our lives be marked by generosity and the desire to multiply blessings, knowing that in doing so, we fulfill God's purpose and attract even more of His grace upon us.
