Genesis 28:6-9 tells the story of Esau, Jacob’s older brother, who realized that his father Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him to Paddan Aram to find a wife there, with strict instructions not to marry a Canaanite woman. Jacob obeyed his parents’ wishes and departed for Paddan Aram. Seeing that his Canaanite wives displeased his father, Esau went to the house of Ishmael and chose another wife, Mahalath, Ishmael's daughter and granddaughter of Abraham.
Many of us, like Esau, have chosen our paths spontaneously, sometimes ignoring sage advice and walking in ways that are not pleasing to God and our loved ones. Esau’s behavior changed when he understood that his earlier actions were looked down upon by his father. Seeking his father’s blessing, Esau attempted to mirror Jacob’s actions by choosing a wife that was not Canaanite.
This story exemplifies the importance of acting rightly, regardless of what others are doing, for blessings pour onto those who walk in obedience. It is a reminder that we cannot change our past actions, but we always have the opportunity to correct our future behavior. Esau’s change in attitude serves as a powerful message that it's never too late to align our actions with God’s purpose.
As believers, the world looks at us, just as Esau observed Jacob. We must strive to be like Jacob, obeying God's commands and living a life that is pleasing to Him. When others notice the blessings that come from obedience, they too might change their ways, just as Esau did—a testament to the power of leading by example.
Today, let us choose to walk in the path of obedience, knowing that this is pleasing to the Lord and serves as a beacon to those around us. Ignite the true path—and let others see and follow.
"Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children." - Ephesians 5:1
May your day be filled with the joy of obedience and the peace of knowing you're walking in God's will.
