In James 4, we are confronted with an urgent and transformative call: the need to turn away from impurity and draw near to God with humility. The process of sanctification is not just about abandoning sin but also about recognizing our total dependence on God and approaching Him with a contrite and sincere heart. James exhorts us: “Draw near to God, and He will welcome you! Sinners, cleanse your hands, and you who have a divided mind because of worldly passions, purify your hearts” (James 4:8).
These words are a powerful invitation to intimacy with God, but they are also a warning about the condition of our hearts. We cannot approach Him with hands stained by sin or with minds divided by the passions of this world. Sanctification requires us to be purified—not by our own strength, but by God's grace, which enables us to let go of everything that distances us from Him.
Coming to God with humility means acknowledging that, without Him, we can do nothing. It means admitting our failures, weaknesses, and constant need for His mercy. It is an act of surrender, where we lay down our wills, desires, and plans at the feet of the One who knows what is best for us. When we humble ourselves before Him, He lifts us up and welcomes us into His loving arms.
Purity of heart and humility go hand in hand. To purify the heart is more than just avoiding sin; it is seeking to align our thoughts, desires, and motivations with God's will. It is allowing Him to transform us from the inside out, renewing our minds and making us more like Christ each day.
James reminds us that when we draw near to God with a pure and humble heart, He does not reject us. On the contrary, He welcomes us with love and fills us with His presence. This is the miracle of grace: even though we are sinners, we are received by a holy God when we turn to Him in repentance and faith.
Today, we are challenged to examine our hearts. What has been keeping us away from God? What passions or impurities have divided our loyalty? May we, with humility, draw near to Him, confess our sins, and seek His purification. For He is faithful to forgive, restore, and lead us on His path of holiness.
May our journey of sanctification be marked by recognition and humility. And as we draw near to God, may we experience the depth of His love and the transformation that only He can bring into our lives.
