1 Corinthians 1:4-5, 7-9

I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge— so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Introduction

In these opening lines of Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, we encounter a warm, pastoral greeting that blesses God for the grace already at work within the believers. Paul writes not to rebuke but to acknowledge the rich spiritual gifts and the growing faith of the church in Corinth. The verses set a tone of gratitude, encouragement, and expectancy: a people enriched in every way because of Christ, awaiting the fullness of Christ’s return, and held secure by God’s faithful calling. This passage invites readers today to pause and recognize the gracious realities that sustain faith, even in a world that tests and unsettles the church.

Historical-Cultural Context and Authorship

Paul the Apostle wrote this letter to the church in Corinth, a cosmopolitan city known for its commerce, philosophy, and religious pluralism (Acts 18). The church there faced divisions, rivalries, and questions about spiritual gifts and maturity. In this context, Paul emphasizes the sufficiency of God’s grace in Christ Jesus—how believers, despite human weaknesses and surrounding pressures, are enriched in speech and knowledge and kept by Christ until the day of His return. The apostle’s gratitude for the Corinthians’ faith is rooted in his conviction that God’s call and gifts are grace-filled and reliable, not earned by human effort.

- Jesus Christ our Lord: the centerpiece of all grace, gifts, and future hope.

Explanation and Meaning of the Text

The passage centers on gratitude for grace given in Christ Jesus. God’s grace causes believers to be enriched in every way—especially in speech and knowledge—so that they are not lacking in any gift as they wait for Christ’s revealing. The anticipation of the Lord’s return is not a ground for anxiety but a motivating context for faithfulness. Paul’s assertion that God is faithful underscores the assurance that the call into fellowship with Jesus is secure. The language of being kept faultless at the day of Christ points to God’s sustaining power and the divine responsibility for steadfast perseverance. Together, these verses remind us that maturity, gifts, and perseverance flow from God’s faithful initiative, not merely human striving.

Devotional

In gratitude, I pause to remember that all gifts—whether in words, knowledge, or faith—are gifts first given by God, who calls us into fellowship with His Son. May I live each day under the discipline of grace, relying on Christ’s sustaining power to remain faithful until the day He is revealed.

The Father’s faithfulness is the quiet anchor for our souls. As we wait, may our lives reflect the confidence of belonging to Jesus, and may we encourage one another to persevere in hope, love, and truth.
