Matthew 6:25

"Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

Introduction

In Matthew 6:25, Jesus speaks directly to a heart that fears hunger and want. He invites us to look beyond daily concerns for food and clothing and to see the larger purpose of life itself. This verse sits within the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus calls his followers to a different rhythm of living—one rooted in trust, dependence on God, and a mindfulness of the kingdom that reshapes our priorities and fears.

Historical-Cultural Context and Authorship

The Gospel of Matthew presents Jesus as the Teacher who fulfills the Law and the Prophets, addressing a largely Jewish audience within a first-century Palestinian setting. Life in that world depended on agricultural cycles and the mercy of God for daily provision. Worries about food, drink, and clothing were practical and pressing realities. Jesus’ instruction here challenges a common anxiety of the era by pointing to a deeper identity as God’s children and to faithfulness in the Father’s provision. Traditionally attributed to Matthew, the tax collector and apostle, this Gospel emphasizes Jesus’ authority, mercy, and the inaugurated kingdom that invites listeners into a new way of trusting God in everyday needs.
